New York’s Botanical Garden – Bar Car Night
At first consideration, I wasn’t too sure I’d be interested in a train show. Trains, eh… but after hearing about an adult evening event at New York’s Botanical Garden, I decided to give it a try. It’s just a short ride from NYC… and the verdict is, the NYBG Bar Car Night is a great evening out for the holiday season!
My husband and I and some friends had a little while before our scheduled time for the Train Show, so we strolled along past the gorgeous conservatory building which houses the train show. It was a beautiful night to bundle up in the crisp night air and witness all the ‘pretty’ before us. There were several events being staged to keep the visitors interested and engaged. Just outside of the gift shop, we were captivated by two talented member of Cirque de Light, lighting up the night with a fire show.
Between the entrance to the Café and the outdoor bar area, a professional carver from Okamoto Studios fashioned an ice sculpture of a holiday deer. Incredible. Although they boast ‘dining’, the options are limited. The Pine Tree Café is your simple cafeteria type setting that was decorated nicely for the occasion, and included a 5 piece jazz band that were really good. If you’re looking for a dinner ‘out’, you might want to have dinner before attending the event, then snack at the cafe later. The menu is limited. The outside bar area, Frosty’s Schnapps Haus, offers roasted chestnuts, pretzels and Hot Chocolate with caramel or peppermint liquors, Hot Apple Cider, etc… a nice touch.
The train show is held in the gorgeous conservatory building. The show is massive and the model trains move along on tracks that run through displays of 150 different NYC landmarks including the Statue of Liberty and Rockefeller Center. Natural materials are used to make up the displays. Very impressive. They have even fashioned overhead bridges for the trains to run through.
Here are just a few of the great scenes;
The gift shop had some unique gifts that were worth checking out. I bought several things and I’m not normally a gift shop kinda’ buyer.
For discounts tickets visit Living Social.com. Search under the local tab for New York Botanical Garden. There’s still some dates available through January. Truly a ‘different’ type of experience and worth the trip. I’d have to say it’s a great place to visit at any time, but to witness this enchanting winter wonderland after dark, lit up for the holiday season, is a beautiful thing.
