Visit The Legendary Leaning Tower of Pisa
It’s an interesting story…. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the four buildings in Pisa’s Cathedral Complex, the Field of Miracles. The structure was started in the year 1173. The lean began in the early stages of construction due to the soft, sandy clay base under the foundation. Construction was halted 100 years waiting for the ground to settle. Although engineers worked to find a solution, none was found but construction continued regardless. It took over 200 years to complete.
The first time we visited was at night. We were so unimpressed with the area that we never expected to return. On our last visit to Tuscany, my husband and I stayed in a town that was relatively close and decided to give it another go. I’m so glad we did! It was actually spectacular to see during the day! The entire complex was made from beautiful white marble that sparkled in the sunshine. Built in a medieval Romanesque style, the buildings are covered with perfect archways and incredible sculptures.
Until recent years, people were not allowed to walk the 251 step spiral staircase due to construction. You are welcome to climb the tower now. If you take a close look at the pictures, you’ll see many brave souls just outside of the top of the bell tower. I’m not really afraid of heights, but that’s an angle I’m not that comfortable with.
And yes, everyone stands in front and tries to ‘hold it up’ for the camera. Cheesy, but true. You’ll have to get in line.
The bell tower is currently a little more than five meters off perpendicular and still sinking, as is the cathedral and baptistry. If you’re planning to climb it, you best hurry up~!
I wouldn’t plan to spend much time in Pisa, the town is not that nice. There’s a lot of vendors, hawkers, etc… If you’re looking to get some souvenirs and replicas, you’ll have your pick. Well worth the trip, not worth the extended stay.
