8 Great Internet Security Tips While Traveling
With the majority of travelers carrying smart phones, ipads, and laptops, there are some standard internet protocols to follow to keep your information safe from would-be hackers. The following internet security tips are recommended while traveling.
1) Delete History on Public Computers
If using public computers at your hotel, cruise ship, etc… make sure to uncheck the save password checkbox if entering a password and then delete your browser history and cookies before exiting. To do this go to the top browser bar and click on tools, internet options, then delete browsing history. Be sure to log out of the computer completely.
2) Check Network Name
While many hotels, airports and public places offer free wifi – be sure to find out what the exact name of their hotspot is. Many hackers develop faux names very similar to the location name of the free wifi. They count on the fact that many guests will just look for the strongest connection with a name close to the location name. Your information is then directly captured through their personal network. This is just an easier collection method as hackers can also use the public network to monitor your connections.
3) No Private Info on Public WiFi
If possible, try to only use public computers and wifi hotspots for information that you wouldn’t mind being seen. Looking for a place for dinner? No problem. Checking your bank account? Not such a good idea. If you have to login with a password, think twice about your connection.
4) Password Sharing or Unique Password
While your hotel connection may be more secure than the airport, not so if your password is not unique. If all guests are using the same password or a password such as ‘room123’ these are easy targets for hackers. A password containing a portion of your name, for instance, would be more individualized and secure.
5) Check for Secure Encrypted Sites
Before entering any personal information such as credit card information on a website be sure that to verify that you are on a site that begins with https:// not http://. These sites are encrypted to add a level of security and protect the privacy of the information you transmit.
6) Bank Through Data Usage, Not WiFi
Any banking transactions should be completed over your phone data usage rather than a wifi hotspot. This is a more secure method as it is much easier for hackers to monitor your connections and information through wifi than data. While your information could still be hacked, it is less likely. P.S. You can also use your phone’s data usage to tether your laptop to the internet if you prefer to use your laptop for your banking/personal transactions.
7) Virtual Private Network
Consider buying a VPN program. A VPN provides you with your own network within the network you are working on. There are many different providers such as Nord VPN or Private Internet Access. You can purchase their products monthly for travel or yearly to keep you protected wherever you go.
8) Ensure Your Devices are Password Protected
If traveling with your personal devices, it is best to set them up with a password at startup in case of theft. Turn off wifi when not in use.
By enlisting the above internet security tips, it will be less likely for hackers to obtain your valuable information!
