Just Chillin’ @ SeaWorld
It’s hard to believe it’s been 25 years since my last visit to SeaWorld. As I made my way into the park on this chilly January morning, I wondered if I would still be in awe. The answer is yes. Although I’m nowhere near the extreme of my marine biologist brothers’ long-standing obsession with the underwater world… I do find the uniqueness, exquisite colors, beauty as well the oddities seen in SeaWorld incredible!
First of all, this park is nicely done. I was impressed with the gorgeous, well-planned and well-maintained landscaping. I’m a sucker for great landscaping, throw in a palm tree or two and I’m in heaven! The whole park is extremely clean. It’s a great place to stroll on a sunny Florida day.
As far as the animals, my favorites are the dolphins, always. They are so incredibly smart, loving and playful. I enjoyed Dolphin Cove. You can see the dolphins and their trainers up close and personal. The Blue Horizon Dolphin Show was a skilled and flawless performance. I not only love to watch these charismatic dolphins perform, but better than that, I love to watch the faces of the audience light up… young, old and in-between!
I couldn’t wait to go to the Clyde and Seymour show. I loved this show the last time I was here. Back then, it was a mystery/detective type of show. Now the theme is ‘high school’. Ehhh, I wasn’t a big fan. The seal and otter performances were great, but the acting was a little too cheesy for me! I’m sure the younger kids love it though, so who asked me anyway?!
Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin feels like the real deal.. seriously, you are FREEZING while you view these adorable creatures. A short ride takes you into the penguin colony exhibit. You can choose the ‘mild’ or ‘wild’ way to get there. Sorry to say that I wussed out with the ‘mild’. Next time I’ll spice it up a bit.
I didn’t get a chance to see Shamu Stadium’s ‘One Ocean’ show during my visit. I would have loved to see the majestic orca whales, but time didn’t allow.
I know that there’s been much controversy over killer whale captivity. I do understand PETAs concern for the welfare of all animals and agree that they must be cared for properly. It’s obvious that SeaWorld works hard to offer the proper environment and care for their animals. I believe the movie “Blackfish” leans to the bias of the PETA supporters and was dramatized for the sake of the movie. Regardless, it seems that SeaWorld has heard the concerns and is working on plans for larger habitats for the whales as well as additional efforts to ensure the well being of these animals and their trainers.
I believe there is a place for aquariums and zoos in our world. It’s through their research, development, conservation efforts and educating the public that further ensures species survival in the wild. The children who visit may be inspired to be the next generation of animal lovers and care givers. I’m happy they can view, bond with and learn about these beautiful creatures.
The Pet’s Ahoy show was something new to me. This show features many four-legged creatures, not of the ocean world. The beauty is that they are all rescue animals. They put on a great show! Visit seaworldcares.com to read about their commitment to the rescue of animals, whether from sea or land.
