With the right apps installed, your smart phone can be your best friend while travelling. The task of reading reviews and finding the right apps can be time consuming and challenging. I’ve done the legwork for you! Here’s a list of 10 free travel apps that are sure to make your next trip your best trip!
Scan for the nearest wifi hotspots anywhere in the world. I’m putting this first on the list because if you’re out of the country, data charges can be incredibly expensive! In order to use the travel apps listed below, find a free wifi hotspot.
Note: While hotspots are great, try not to use them when accessing secure information. For more on that, check out my post on Internet Security.
This is one of my favorite travel apps. I’ve been using it for years! Millions of traveler reviews help you find the best hotels, restaurants and things to do in the area. A new feature is ‘Near Me Now’, which will give you info on places based on your current location.
Social networking for travelers! Get insider tips for your destinations. Find out what others have to say. You can choose to search for information directly or ask questions on the forums. Share reviews and pictures from your own travels. It includes a postcard tool.
Long layover or delayed flight? GateGuru will provide you with a map of the terminal that you are in, as well as a list of restaurants and their reviews. Quickly access information including flight status and security checkpoint wait times. Of course, if the layover is really long, check out my article on Layover Excursions.
Need a ride? They have you covered. Uber is currently operating in 200 cities and growing. After the set up process, just tap ‘Set Pickup Location’’ to notify Uber you need to be picked up. They’ll send a text message to let you how long the wait will be and the name of the driver. Another text will let you know when your car service arrives. You can get a fare quote as well.
Realizing you should have completed that Rosetta Stone Italian course before you landed in Italy? Now you’re in the hospital having a hard time relating to the doctor. This app will translate for you. Just say the phrase into the phone and this app will translate it into the language of your choice.
What grandkid doesn’t like to get something in the mailbox with their name on it!? For .99, which includes the postage, you can have a personalized message and photo made into a postcard and sent via snailmail. Nice.
Forward all your various confirmations from airlines, hotel, cars to this website. The app will generate an itemized itinerary for your trip.
Now this one has a little different twist. Enter your location and the specific food you’re craving and get user recommendations for the best restaurant. Check it out by restaurant, to see what dishes other ‘foodspotters’ love there.
A virtual travel scrapbook. Using the GPS of your phone it will map out where you are, catalog your pictures and load them into a travel journal that you can customize. Fantastic!
