Is Cruising For You? Pros and Cons of Cruising
Many people debate over the pros and cons of a cruise vacation. To help you determine if cruising is right for you, here’s a little info to help you decide…
While an amazing vacation, it is geared toward those looking for adventure, sightseeing, different destinations and cultures. You’ll need some energy for most cruise vacations as it’s geared toward exploring. For total relaxation you may prefer to pick an all-inclusive resort with lounge chairs, palapas and a cabana boy bringing drinks with umbrellas, although you’ll find most of that available on the ship as well!
Perks of Cruising
A great perk of cruising is the ability to visit many destinations and cultures in a small amount of time. While your time in port may be limited, if you pick your excursions wisely, you can get a real feel for the destination. I look at it as a preview.. kinda like sampling books on Amazon before you buy them.
In addition, cruises are normally a great value! There are amazing deals available, especially considering the all-inclusive food and entertainment. It would be close to impossible to get a 4 star all-inclusive resort for the week that provides the level of amenities and experiences a cruise can offer. In most cases, alcoholic beverages and excursions are the only ‘add-on’. Tip: Don’t just pick from cruise providers excursion itineraries. Do a search of your destination port, as sometimes it may be best to spend some time in the port city. For additional excursions, try sites like www.viator.com for day trips or ask your Travel Specialist to help you plan some great and memorable shore experiences.
You’re not driving. Enjoy yourself.. Eat, drink and be merry!
Exploration and Introduction to Destinations
Years ago, being a new traveler to Europe, I took a Western Mediterranean cruise. The departure port was Rome and then we cruised through the Italian Riviera, the French Rivera, on to Spain, rounding back through Sardinia, returning to Rome. I’ve also taken an Eastern Mediterranean cruise which originated in Venice and went through Croatia, Turkey and Greece before returning to Venice. From these initial introductions, I’ve already returned for vacations in Portofino, Italy and Nice, France! I look forward to getting back to Greece in the near future!
I think the best part of this amazing experience was being able to see which areas to explore again and which to ‘cross off the list’. BTW, this is a great way to check things off your ‘bucket list’!
Quirks of Cruising
Most of these ships are soooo large that it’s unlikely you’ll feel the movement unless you are extremely sensitive to motion sickness. Although uncommon, there is always the possibility of rough seas. Look into medication or patches before you go, just in case. But don’t worry if you forget, most cruise lines have an infirmary with seasickness medication available.
Nighttime is for cruising, so you won’t experience nightlife in the port destination. Many people fear getting bored at sea. If you’re not on one of the larger ships this is possible. Pick the ship accordingly, especially if there are multiple days ‘at sea’. The majority of cruise ships have enough options to keep you busy every night with different venues for fine dining, great entertainment and a wide variety of activities!
