Cabo San Lucas – A Destination To Meet Your Every Need
What a fantastic vacation destination! With it’s ‘lifestyles of the rich and famous’ type reputation, the area looks to meet every vacationers needs. You’ll be surprised by the countless things to do in Cabo San Lucas. Don’t forget to take the time to just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery!
The area, known as Los Cabos, includes the villages of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo as well as The Corridor, the highway that divides the two. The Corridor has an abundance of outstanding resorts, condos, golf courses and restaurants dotted along the coastline, with an amazing view of the Sea of Cortez just beyond.
The village of Cabo, at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, is the main attraction of the area. The scene is magnificent! We’ve stayed at the Pueblo Bonito Sunset Beach both times. The stunning view includes El Arco, the beautiful signature archway in their sea cliffs.
The downside for Sunset Beach is that there is no swimming due to the fierce undertow. While the color and clarity of the water is amazing, there are several beaches in Los Cabos deemed ‘no swim’ due to the undertow. If ocean swimming is important to you, keep this in mind when planning.
There’s no lack to the choices for water based activities. Deep sea fishing, whale watching and sunset cruises (which are a must) are very popular. Snorkeling and scuba diving excursions are plentiful due to the extensive marine life. Even the seals are friendly. On a charter fishing trip the seals and sea lions swam right into the foam behind the ship’s swim platform and looked for handouts!!
For adventurer’s, there’s zip-lining, hiking and riding camel-back on the beach, not that you’ll see me doing any of those!! You can also rent an ATV or Jeep for an off-road adventure, but be sure to ask which areas you can ride in. True story…. I thought my husband and I might not make it past our honeymoon when we met up with the barrel of a rifle in the back woods in the open Jeep we rented. This Mexican gentlemen was definitely not excited to see us ‘gringos’, but thankfully didn’t shoot. Whew!
Visit the neighboring town of San Jose del Cabo, with it’s old world Mexican charm. There’s a great tequila shop there with 300 brands of tequila! It might be suggested to take a day trip to Todos Santos. It’s about an hour trip along the cacti lined coastline which is interesting as it’s not often you’ll see this ocean, desert mix! The town itself is tiny and includes the Hotel California and a few small shops. The ride is enjoyable and a relaxing break from the beach but just so you are aware, the town is a little disappointing.
The majority of restaurants are incredibly good. My favorite, The Office, has no interior seating – all tables are on the beach! At night, there is a great choice of nightclubs and bars. The most popular nightclub is Cabo Wabo, owned by musician, Sammy Hagar. It’s huge, right in the downtown area and a lot of fun. The marina area also has many nightlife venues.
Some cons to have in mind… 1) throughout Los Cabos you’ll encounter many vendors who aggressively peddle their wares to tourists. Be firm, but polite. 2) The trendy marina area, loaded with premium shopping, has unfortunately taken away from the original downtown area. You’ll find much of the old town of Cabo San Lucas closed up or turned into tourist shops.
The perks are so many, I can’t think of any other beach destination I’ve visited that has offered so much!! Visit once and you’re sure to return. This is the one destination that should meet your every need!
Happy Travels! Patricia
P.S. A lot of my pictures from Cabo did not come out well… shout out to my friend Phil Nyer, I borrowed some of his!
